How Fly Fishing Came About-A Brief History Lesson
Fly fishing is actually a very old sport. It was played in Ancient Greece, and then in Scotland and Northern England.
When the Greeks first partook in this sport they usually applied a hook to a long piece of red yarn, and they just went totally in instinct. Later on, when the British started participating in this sport they invented a new "dry fly" technique, which will be explained more in later blog submissions.
In more modern times, new materials were then used for fly fishing lines. Silk was one of them that was implemented. These were often used instead of horse hair because they were lighter.
In the 19th Century, this increasingly popular sport migrated to the Catskill Mountains of New York. After this time, this activity took off in American as the fever had spread to Maine, Vermont, and eventually to places like Wisconsin.
Of course, nowadays one of the favorite fly fishing locations is now Alaska. Rainbow trout is probably one of the favorite picks on which enthusiastic participants use this technique. Depending upon where you go in Alaska harvests up to 20, 30, 40, or more pounds sometimes are found.
